How the model works
A producer creates the instrumental. You bring your lyrics, melody and performance to make a new song. Rather than paying an upfront beat licensing fee, you agree to share the revenue specified in the license. On BeatSplit, review and activate the applicable agreement before commercial release.
Free upfront does not mean royalty-free
“No upfront licensing fee” describes how you pay for permission to use the beat. It does not mean the instrumental is copyright-free, that you can redistribute it on its own, or that there are no obligations after release. The agreement determines what you can do with the beat and how revenue is shared.
What should you check in the agreement?
Check the beat and producer names, the people who will sign, the permitted uses, and the royalty and publishing terms. Confirm which revenue the shares apply to and how it is accounted for. Do not assume a percentage from another beat or treat a royalty share as a statement about ownership: read the terms of the specific agreement.
A practical release example
You choose a beat, write a song and prepare the recording. Before releasing it commercially, complete the license activation process and keep the agreement with your release records. When the song earns money, follow the royalty obligations in that agreement. The illustration above shows the process; it does not prescribe a split percentage.
Before you release your song
Make sure you have the rights needed for any additional recordings, samples or collaborators you introduce. Confirm the credits and release information, and keep a copy of the activated license. If a term is unclear, ask for clarification before release rather than assuming the word “free” removes the condition.
How to choose your next beat
Start with the song you want to make: does the arrangement leave space for your vocal, and does the tempo fit your delivery? Preview a few options, then open the beat page to review the available files and licensing information. Musical fit and clear terms matter more than the label “free”.
